Inspired by this blog, we were overheard today. I was in a bookshop with Mark, and we were looking at the Harry Potter books. I explained to Mark that yes, I have read the books. The reason being simple : there was a time, at the height of Potter mania, when some of my prospective partners (some of whom later become actual partners), insisted that I read the books so that we too could have conversations about Potter.
"I had to read all the books, so I could get laid." I said to Mark.
"That was a hardship." said a woman as she left the bookshop and passed us.
Shit! Overheard.
A very astute comment - and unlike mostr comments I couldn't read what she really meant. Even if, by the 714th page of Harry Potter and The Incredibly Long Fifth Book In The Series, I couldn't decide if it was actually worth the effort. It was a hell of an effort.
Oh, and for the record, the first two books are shit : poorly written, and in need of judicious and massive editing. To me, they felt like the first two novels she had written : and the first two novels anyone writes are not worth reading, unless you're brilliant - and J K Rowling isn't brilliant.
I've written four novels by now. The first three aren't very good : the fourth is, with some careful editing, possibly worth reading. I'll tell you more about them if you like. (You know what the comments box is for).
Oh, and thanks for reading.

"Harry Potter and the Half Breed Prince". £9.99 in Hardback on Amazon.
My good lady has already ordered it. It is not out until July 2005. Insanity.
I am proud to say that I have never read any of the Harry Potter books. Unfortunately it also means that I am disallowed from commenting on the merits or otherwise of the books.
Damn!

They were the first two novels she'd written.
Don't lose sight of the fact that these are kids books, meant to be read by 9-14 year olds, not acerbic 30somethings.
We love 'em. A nice easy read, great character progression and some surprisingly dark bits for kids books.
We've got our copy of Half Blood Prince on order from Amazon too.

The first three are okay. No, in fact the first three are fun. In my opinion the high point is the third one, and it's been increasingly rapidly downhill since then. A good 100 pages could have been edited out of "The Goblet of Fire", and a good 150 pages (at least) out of the last one. Worse than that, JKR is showing a worrying inability to capture Harry's teenage angst. At the moment it seems to consist of him shouting and blushing a lot. The dialogue has always been a bit "...said Ron, and ..... said Hermione", but it seems to be getting worse.
One possible reason for me starting to use a more critical filter when reading these books, is that by the last two, I had read Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy. Now there's some quality reading. Majestic.
In Harry Potter's favour, anything that gets millions of kids reading proper books has got to be a good thing, right? And don't forget, it got all those right-wing christians stoked up about witchcraft as well.....

oh, and I'm interested in hearing about your novel!
