Well done for making it to the end of 2023. 2023 was one of the best years I've had in a long time, where I started to find some answers to some long standing questions I've had in my mind for at least four years around my health and myself. 2024 is also the year of "Highlander II : The Quickening", so as long as 2024 is better than THAT, we're good. I talk about the singles - "The Robots", "The Model" and "Neon Lights", a luminous 12" single, the 2004 and 2009 remasters, coloured vinyl editions, and the 2017 3-D Catalogue revision. What better way to spend the day than to spend an hour talking about 'The Pope Of Mope', Morrissey? Well, I talk about his 1988-1990 period, which saw him play one solo gig in Wolverhampton, record five singles and B-sides, abandon an album, and convert it - "Bona Drag" - into a singles compilation, change writing partners several times, face legal bother, a joke Melody Maker headline, and ever lower chart positions. Some of the B-sides languished in obscurity and long deleted singles for decades, and a 2010 'expanded' version changed the mixes of at least two songs, as well as 5 unreleased songs including some recorded years before, or after, the rest of the album. I also discuss fame, crime, the nature of love and belonging, the innate need to experience pleasure, Dolphins and Pufferfish, George Osborne, The Conservative Government, manipulating statistics to bend reality, the YTS scheme, and well, anything else I think of! I think that great art speaks to, and about, the times in which it was made and which we live in - and its difficult to connect with a band that seems so determinedly keen on revisiting its past at the expense of living in, and experiencing, the current moment. There were some average 'singles' (what is a single anyway?), some extra tracks, a Indies only 7", a deluxe CD with demos, and some predictable live shows. I'm harsh on this album, but only because I hold the bands I love to a higher standard than bands that I think are rubbish. 03 December 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388452.post-51618708234104313812023-11-28T18:03:00.002+00:002024-01-01T18:03:48.334+00:00MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 338 : The Flaming Lips Go Weird! 2011-12. 28 Nov 2023.<iframe style="background-image:url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ZxYCMb8jQmk/hqdefault.jpg)" width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/ZxYCMb8jQmk?si=Z6txmOE2AJBG4cVg" frameborder="0"></iframe><p><br>Mercifully free of the ravages of commercialism, The Flaming Lips found themselves without a record contract for the first time in 25 years, and so, went weird! <p>
The album was preceded with a short European Tour that saw the band roadtesting the songs before final mixing was complete, saw two singles "Trans Europe Express" and "Showroom Dummies" (the latter of which was released three times in 1977, 1978 and 1982), and was released in English and German - with different cover art and track listings. It was remastered in 2004/2009, before finally being released in the 2017 3-D Version.

Does this get The Seal Of Approval? 08 November 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388452.post-19939979688186017762023-11-06T15:35:00.001+00:002023-11-12T15:35:55.239+00:00MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 330 : Morrissey goes solo with "Viva Hate" in 1988. 06 November 2023.<iframe style="background-image:url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/oTsxdfU9XSo/hqdefault.jpg)" width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/oTsxdfU9XSo?si=2rtxVE1UBFGDHPLq" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>And further into the fog we fall... Morrissey released his first solo LP ("Viva Hate", or ... if you're in Australia "Education In Reverse"), in 1988, with an uncertain future, not knowing if he would be successful or disappear into obscurity, exploring three lyrical obsessions - the end of a relationship, the shadow of history and legacy, and post-fame identity - with new musicians, a new writing partner, and a number of obscure, unreleased-for-decades songs that slipped out on reissues over the years. This is a fascinating period, and I dart around talking about managed decline, Liverpool, the end of something, the start of something else, life under Conservative rule (sound familiar?) and anything else I can think of. 06 November 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388452.post-2719906558623882022023-10-30T15:33:00.001+00:002023-11-12T15:33:59.693+00:00MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 329 : The Exorcist Movies ranked! 30 October 2023<iframe width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/snrJhg9Q93o?si=A92uF-oLLpqIYX4n" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>An utterly superfluous and terrible new "Exorcist" film, "Exorcist : Believer" came out a few weeks ago, and so I have ranked all the Exorcist movies, including "Beginning", "Dominion", "Exorcist", "The Heretic", "The Ninth Configuration", "Legion", and the new one. I can't talk about the worst without pointing out all the reasons why the best Exorcist movie is the best one, so I start at #6, and then build up to #1. Basically, don't let David Gordon Green touch franchises, he doesn't understand what he's doing. Happy Halloween! 30 October 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388452.post-368249873410613772023-10-26T15:30:00.003+01:002023-11-12T15:32:34.461+00:00MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 328 : Pink Floyd's "Obscured By Clouds" (La Vallee) 1972. 26 October 2023.<iframe width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/IqDhTaoO488?si=2WKJZFr3vbK9TnuD" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Pink Floyd's seventh studio record - "Obscured By Clouds" - is often overlooked as one of those Not Very Good Soundtrack LP's, but that's wrong. It's a strong cohesive record that executes a number of strong songs and instrumental pieces, including the never-played-live "Free Four" [one of my favourite Floyd songs], and a lot of stuff that has been unjustly written out of history. I also mention unofficial releases 'one and done' copyright exploitation releases, The Early Years box set, bad seventies films, post-rock, prog-rock, stadium rock, obscure singles, and the live premiere of "Dark Side Of The Moon" in Brighton over a year before it was released. 26 October 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388452.post-49088001896790068932023-10-23T15:28:00.001+01:002023-11-12T15:28:45.785+00:00MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 327 : David Bowie's Top 10 Movies...and artist in exile 2004-2012. 23 October 2023.<iframe style="background-image:url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/J1JB5Nux1l0/hqdefault.jpg)" width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/J1JB5Nux1l0?si=0sPW_D5-hdPnpVVn" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>If David Bowie had just been an actor, he would be very, very respected and regarded as one of the finest lesser known talents in his field. I talk about my Top 10 Bowie movies (and his roles in them), and his exile in 2004-2012, where he made guest appearances and vocals on other artists work and quietly became a myth. Hopefully you''ll find a film you'll love! Also, I think I'm still at the back end of this cold/flu thing so maybe not at my most sparkly in this one. 23 October 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388452.post-42954386100291816172023-10-18T15:25:00.001+01:002023-11-12T15:26:45.287+00:00MARK'S NOTCAST Ep 326 : Kraftwerk's "Radioactivity" 1975-1976. 18 October 2023.<iframe style="background-image:url(https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5pMLYi7M01A/hqdefault.jpg)" width="480" height="270" src="https://youtube.com/embed/5pMLYi7M01A?si=HNDbqRtjUGFJ9vob" frameborder="0"></iframe><p>Kraftwerk's fifth (or second, if you're Kraftwerk) studio album "Radioactivity" came out in Germany in October 1975. So happy 48th birthday to it! It came out in January 1976 in the UK, and didn't chart at all here. This elegant, song length poem/hymn to the power of power, energy, radio, information, and technology, forms part of Kraftwerk's "complete work of art" ethos, showing the durability of the ideas, melodic strengths, and the power of strong songwriting to create a satisfying, linear narrative. I go into chart positions, technology of the 1930's, line ups, the structure of bands as businesses, singles, live shows, touring, and live premieres of new material as the band worked up their next record on the road. 18 October 2023.Markhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05874971733723914974noreply@blogger.com0
