Speech From The Groom 24.03.12. around 5pm.

Most people, when asked what they want most in the world, know exactly the answer. Depending on your age, it could be a Money or Power. Health. Or, if you are Emporer of the Universe, a fully operational Death Star.

Almost all of our lives we are looking for something. It doesn't have a name, as such. You cannot hold it. You can't own it, or buy it. It can't be framed. Or sold. Or tasted or touched. But it is there in all of us. And if we are lucky, the luckiest people in the world, you may – just may – experience it. We get to forget the imperfections of this world, and forget even that there are imperfections in the world, and feel, for a moment, that this, this is the world that is everything it could be – and everything we hoped it would be.

Some of us find this in sport, or in petting cats. Or a nice cup of tea and a sit down.

Whenever I was asked what I want most in the world – which is about once a decade – I knew the answer. And it has always been the same.

“Happiness.”

Not seeing the glass half-empty. Not seeing the world in the cruellest light. Seeing the best in people, not the worst. Seeing what could be. Not what could not be. To take out of everything the best you can find. To see the world for what it is, and not what it isn't.

Certainly, things could be better and different for every one of us. I certainly could be richer, slimmer, or more charming. My career could be healthier. But today, and for a long time, I have been the richest man in the world. Since the moment on 24th March 2010, at 10.17pm, when I asked a question. And the answer was “Yes”.

And today we are here to celebrate with friends and family who can be here, and those who can't, the next chapter in the great adventure we call life.

Every superhero needs a sidekick. And my wife is my hero. If I can be the Q to her 007, the Han Solo to her Princess Leia, then I am honoured.

This amazing woman, who has believed in me when no one else did.

This amazing woman, who walks through this imperfect world, and makes it better just by being here.

Who makes me laugh every day in ways I could never imagine.

Who reminds me that even when it is raining, there is always a sun above the clouds.

Who makes me watch EastEnders four nights a week. And I'm almost starting to enjoy it. Almost.

I'm thrilled she has let me have a part in her life.

Even going to the supermarket with her is an adventure - greater than exploring Mars without her.

So thank you, Tina, for allowing me to be your husband.

I'd also like to thank Tony and Shirley for meeting, for without which, instead of our wedding, at this time on a Saturday afternoon, I would probably be living on my own, listening to old pop music, surrounded by housework, and eating junk food. And for their help and support since I met their daughter.

I'd also like to thank all of you for sparing your Saturdays – and for travelling great distances – to be part of this day. And all of you who have helped us in putting together this day and believing in us. For your generosity with gifts, and for your love and support. Thank you.

And I'd also like to thank everyone who cannot be here but dearly wish to be. To those who are in hospital, or stuck at work, or working in a hospital, or living in heaven. We love you and miss you. And if you can't be here, get someone who can who bring back cake and photos.

Finally, we couldn't have done this without all of you. On behalf of my wife and I, today is a dream come true. A day that, for many many years, I thought would never happen. I am overjoyed to be proven wrong on that.

To my wife, thank you for the greatest honour I could ever hope for. For my son, and my family. For believing in me. For giving me the happiness I only dreamed of when I was younger. For making my dreams real. For making what was being alive into something worth living.

And now, I conclude with a toast. I toast to all of us – both those who are here and those who can't be – and to the future. Since we're going to spend the rest of our lives there, to the greatest adventure of all : The future.

Comments:
congratulations! I wish you both - your whole family unit - all the very best. Happiness. If you can find that then you are rich indeed.
